Created by underwater volcanic eruptions, R\u00e9union is home to high mountains such as Piton des Neiges (3071m) and Piton Ma\u00efdo (2190m), rare for such a small island. R\u00e9union is a volcanic island located in the vast Indian Ocean, about 800km east of Madagascar and 175km west of Mauritius. It is an overseas department and a region of France. It has an area of 2,512\u33a2. That makes it about twice the size of Okinawa (1,205\u33a2) and it’s home to 859,959 people (as of 2020). The capital is Saint-Denis. The official language is French, but Reunion Creole, derived from French, is also widely spoken. The currency in use is the Euro.
